Environmental impacts of artificial turf at end of life: A life cycle assessment approach

Many studies have oversimplified or approached end-of-life management of artificial turf with assumptions.

The aim of this LUT University study was to investigate methods for managing artificial turf (AT) at the end of its life cycle, assessing the challenges and opportunities associated with this critical phase. 

While many studies have analysed the full lifecycle of artificial turf or compared it with natural grass, end-of-life management has often been oversimplified or approached with assumptions. As a result, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding the accurate assessment of the environmental impacts associated with artificial turf disposal.

To address this gap, the study evaluated three end-of-life management scenarios: energy recovery in Finland, recycling in Denmark, and local recycling in Finland.
