Household waste and biowaste
The purpose of monitoring household waste is to produce information on the progress of the circular economy and to develop waste awareness.
Monitoring waste streams and recycling rates in a sub-national level is important in order to provide informative data for local decision-making as well as to find ways to reach the ambitious EU waste recycling targets nationally.
Regional amounts and recycling rates for municipal solid waste from households have now been estimated in a similar way in different regions in Finland.
Our aim is to provide information on the progress of the circular economy as well as improve the availability and quality of regional data on waste.
Monitoring household waste consists of a questionnaire for the public waste management companies and supplementary information from producer associations, national statistics and estimations.
Household waste recycling in selected pioneer municipalities
You can view the amounts of household waste and household biowaste and recycling using the Tableau visualizations below.
The image shows the amount of household biowaste and its separate collection in selected municipalities in 2016-2019. The municipalities included are pioneer municipalities in the CIRCWASTE project and/or municipalities in the Fisu network.

Almost all non-recyclable waste is utilized as energy. The monitoring of Vantaa is carried out by the Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY. The HSY calculation method corresponds in its initial data to the method used by Syke in other areas.
